Smaller
Kitchens
|
Unlike
the pictures of massive kitchens you see in the glossy magazines,
most kitchens are small and seem pale by comparison. You may
be inclined to think, "Whatever can I do with this tiny space".
No problem, a good designer will enjoy the challenge of making
the most of what you have and by innovation will seemingly
create space out of nowhere.
Here are a few ideas.
- Slimline
appliances are available to fit in a reduced space but
without reducing performance.
- Bespoke
kitchen manufacturers can make cabinets sized especially
to customer requirements, which will avoid wasting valuable
space with filler panels.
- Innovative
internal fittings can give easy access within cabinets
thus ensuring that all available space is maximised.
- Wall
cabinets can reach all the way to the ceiling for accommodating
those items, which you do not often use. If the ceiling
height allows fit 900mm tall wall units - 720mm being
the norm.
- Special
cupboards are available which can store cutlery and other
implements between the floor and wall cabinets.
- Washing
machines and dryers can be stacked, as can some other
appliances such as fridge freezers.
- You
may also think about locating some appliances elsewhere,
garage? utility room?
- Consider
a double oven that will fit under the worktop.
- Think
carefully about what you want to store in the kitchen
& where, open-ended & display cabinets may look
attractive but will not solve storage problems.
- The
space often wasted at plinth level can be fitted with
drawers and also heaters. Mirrored wall cabinets will
give the illusion of space and make the kitchen feel less
enclosed.
- Using
white or light pastel shades can also create the illusion
of space. Lighter woods will also make the room feel less
enclosed.
- Worktops
too should be light, perhaps giving a gentle contrast
with your cabinets.
- If
required, a stronger contrast could be achieved with the
wall tiles.
